EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
